Foresthill Food
Now we all know food is something dear to most people's hearts and our area has some good places, although not quite so many up here in Foresthill.
In Foresthill itself, we have some real good places to dine. We'll cover Auburn and surrounding areas another time (hopefully sooner, rather than later).
Robber's Roost is a dining experience not soon forgotten, with it's unique charm and decor, friendly and informative staff, and incredible menu. Specializing in fresh seafood and beef, our chef has prepared an extensive menu also including salads, pastas, and nightly chef specials sure to delight. We feature a wide selection of regional California wines, and premium beers from around the world. Robber's Roost provides a unique, comfortable and casual dining experience for all. This ambiance, combined with excellent food, service and value will make for a truly memorable visit to the beautiful foothills of the gold country and Foresthill. |
Ore Cart Steakhouse & Red Dirt Saloon -- Keeping the old days alive, the Ore Cart Steakhouse & Red Dirt Saloon, which was opened in 1997 has a hearty down home menu and plenty of history. This eatery is housed in a building originally built in 1852 as a Wells Fargo station stop.
When San Francisco transplant Bobbie Devlin and her partner, Angelo Thompson, took over the building, it had been vacant for 30 years and virtually uninhabitable. "There was a feed store in it, maybe five years before we took it over. There was no power or plumbing-pretty much just a free-standing form," Devlin said. But she and Thompson plunged forward, collecting artifacts from local residents. Today, Foresthill history adorns the walls-which are a foot and half inch thick, made from Foresthill bricks.
The dining room seats 45 people for lunch and dinner seven days a week. One of the attractions is the authentic ore cart (like those used to take the gold from the mines) situated in a corner of the room which the grill is built in to -- this is where the Chef repares your meal. You're even invited to walk up and watch as your steaks are cooked to order, prepared by the ounce -- they have everything from New York to sirloin.
The Ore Cart prepares some pretty mean chicken and fish dishes in addition to the USDA Angus beef. Speaking of beef, the burgers are something else! Thye are the size of a dinner plate!? Called the "Motherlode Burger," it's 10 ounces of meat, cheese and all the trimmin's.
The Ore Cart though, is more than a restaurant. In front of the building, is a bar known as the "Red Dirt Saloon" and it doesn't get more Wild West than this -- right down to tossing your peanut shells on the floor.
The Ore Cart is located at 24601 Foresthill Rd., Foresthill, CA 95631. Phone: 530-367-3644.

| Everybody's Inn -- On the way down the hill (or up if you're coming here) is a roadhouse called "Everybody's Inn" which has changed names many times over the years, best known to old-timers as "The Old Oaken Bucket." Everybody's Inn has beenunder a new owner for a few years and she has been determined to make it more than a roadhouse and has done many nice improvements to this establishment. From what I know they serve breakfast (never time for me as I am always late for work) and lunch and dinner. I'd say stop on in and say hi! We've heard good things, we just never seem toget to stop there...
A bit o' history about Everybody's Inn... During the commercial gold mining days, there was a practice by many miners called "hygrading." This meant they pilfered some gold while being paid to take out all gold for their employers. Before the restaurant was built, a Foresthill resident leased the land, and with the hygrader and one other miner dug a tunnel through serpentine rock behind the current restaurant, calling it a "mine." The only gold ever "found" in their tunnel was the hygrade already procured, but it was now pronounced legitimate.
